DeYoung Family Zoo

Patricia VanEnkevort | Daily Press

WALLACE — Family fun is just a short drive away at the DeYoung Family Zoo, located at N5406 County Road 577, Wallace, Mich.

While at the zoo, families can enjoy a wide range of exotic animals including lions, tigers, monkeys, tortoise, alligators, a hippopotamus and more.

Other animals include domestic barnyard critters, such as goats and horses, that kids and adults alike can feed in the petting zoo portion of the facility.

DeYoung Family Zoo is home to over 400 animals from around the world. The zoo hosts a natural habitat for the animals that reside there, featuring real rocks to sun on, trees to climb, grass to roll around on, and ponds to swim in. From exotic to domestic, there is sure to be something for everyone.

The family zoo is also the only zoo in the Midwest to have both spotted and striped hyenas. With the strongest jaw pressure of any land mammal in Africa, spotted hyenas are an interesting sight during meal time at the zoo.

Striped hyenas have a lush dorsal mane. When they raise it up, they look 30 percent larger.

In addition, the DeYoung Family Zoo is the Home of the Big Cats. The facility holds the largest big cat family in the Midwest with over 40 members and growing. A visit to the zoo is sure to reveal just how amazing and important these animals are, and bring an understanding of the DeYoung family’s goal of conservation through education.

Zoo admission prices are as follows: adults: $12 (age 16 – 65), seniors: $10 (age 65 and older) and children: $8 (age 5 – 16) Free (age 4 and under). The zoo is now open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. CST, with the ticket booth closing at 4:30 p.m.
